Over last two Sundays we have studied James’ theology regarding the necessity of works to substantiate one’s faith.  James is not only N.T. writer to highlight importance of works.  Beginning with Jesus in the Gospels, every NT writer has something to say about the necessity of works in the Christian life.  Below, I have provided a short list of general examples and/or implications about works that span the entire New Testament. Before we get to the list, let me rehearse one definition and share four notes that will help you as you read and reflect upon some of what the New Testament has to say about works.

Definition: Works are acts, deeds, or accomplishments – physical and mental – that are done for the glory of God and for the cause of the gospel.

Notes

(1) The list is not exhaustive (either in subject matter or in Scriptural reference), but it is representative of what the N.T. has to say about works.

(2) Some passages do not include the term “works”, but some type of “work” (activity) is implied even if the term “work” is not specifically used.

(3) The list is not in any particular order; it is meant to provide a panoramic view of works from the perspective of the entire New Testament.

(4) Do not get confused by the volume of N.T. writing about the essential nature of works.  Works are a birthmark of every true believer (Titus 3.8), but works do not save anyone.  (Eph 2.8-9; 2 Tim 1.9; Titus 3.5)

Here’s the list, beginning with James . . .

1. Works are the lifeblood of authentic faith (Jas 2.17)

2. Works substantiate genuine discipleship (Jn 15.8)

3. Works are Spirit-influenced (Eph 4.30; 1 Thess 5.19)

4. Works are others-focused (Eph 2.10)

5. Works facilitate restoration (spiritually, to God; relationally, to one another) (Matt 18.15; Gal 6.1-2)

6. Works seem to be most-pleasing to God when no credit for works is pursued (Matt 6.1, 4)

7. Works are how Christians bear fruit for God’s glory (Jn 15.8)

8. Works are how the body of Christ is joined together so that [the body] is built up in love (Eph 4.11-12, 16)

9. Works fortify assurance (Rom 8.13-16)

10. Works (done in this life) will be part of the eternal legacy of every saint (Rev 14.13)

I am persuaded there are multiple references to works in every book in the New Testament.  (Perhaps you could prove my theory in your 2014 Bible reading?)  Three conclusions:

(1) Works do not save anyone.

(2) Genuine believers will be intentionally and consistently engaged in doing good works for God’s glory.

(3) Though not specifically referenced above, I would suggest that the Church is God’s primary mechanism for training in, and employing of, good works (to be done inside and outside of the walls of the church building).

Seeking to equip you in the work of ministry as I join you in the work of ministry,

Pastor Gary
